The other handoff
Clinical handoff covers the patients. This is the sixty seconds that covers the team — who's running on empty, who needs backup, what the incoming shift should actually know before they walk in.
What it adds
A clinical handoff tells the next shift about the patients. It was never built to tell them that the nurse in room 4's hallway had three rapid responses today, or that the tech everyone relies on is on their last shift before four days off and running thin. That information matters and has nowhere to go — so this gives it one.
How to run it
- Sixty seconds, outgoing charge to incoming charge, separate from the clinical report.
- Three things: who had a hard day, who's short-staffed feeling, and anything the next shift should know about the team, not the patients.
- It's a handoff, not a complaint file. Keep it factual and brief — "X had a rough one, might need a check-in" not a rundown of everyone's mood.
Why it's worth the minute
A charge nurse walking in blind to which of their people are running on fumes is planning the shift with half the information. This is the other half, and it takes less time than reading this sentence took.
