The whiteboard tour

New to leading a team? Walk the floor on day one and ask each person to point at something on the whiteboard that's theirs.

The ask

"Show me something on this board that's yours." A schedule quirk, a joke in the corner nobody has erased in two years, a column somebody added, a system they built because the official one did not work. You will learn the culture faster than any handoff document will teach you.

What you're actually finding out

  • Who built what. Every unit runs on three or four undocumented systems, and the people who built them are the people whose buy-in you need.
  • What the official process does not cover. The workaround on the board is a map of the gap.
  • Who has nothing on the board. That is the more useful half of the exercise, and the reason to do it person by person rather than in a meeting.

The rule that makes it work

Change nothing on that board for thirty days. The tour buys you credit only if it is not an audit. If the first thing you do after the tour is erase somebody's column, you have taught the unit that showing you things is dangerous.

Off the unit

It works anywhere there is a shared surface: the EVS board in the closet, the assignment sheet in sterile processing, the fridge in the break room. Not every team has a whiteboard; every team has a wall.
